Countering Violent Extremist use of the Internet
The Internet and social media are factors enabling violent extremist organizations (VEOs) in Central Asia. They have been identified as a channel of recruitment - including for foreign fighters for the conflict in Syria and Iraq. But what is the scale, scope, and impact of the Internet on the recruitment of extremists into VEO? How effective is the Internet as a tool of recruitment, propaganda, and control in the hands of banned extremist groups in Central Asia?
The Symposium is organized by the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan and the Civil Initiative on Internet Policy.
Until the event:
The Central Asia Security Forum brings together experts and practitioners from the Central Asian region and globally to:
Assess the importance of the Internet as a driver of radicalization in Central Asia relative to other factors.
Identify existing knowledge gaps.
Define recommendations in support of strategic policy options for the prevention of violent extremism in Central Asia in line with international norms and conventions.
